Have I told you guys before about the complete pit where I work? It’s not the firm I’m talking about. The firm is great. I mean that where I work is an actual pit.
My building sits in Salt Lake City’s gleaming new commercial development, City Creek Center. Just kidding. My building sits on the precipice of a huge hole in the middle of a city whose busy urban life is on a four year pause. The hole functions as the center of gravity for the city. That is, it is the center of gravity in much the same way as a black hole is– it sucks the life and pride and human dignity out of everything in its orbit. It turns out it’s very hard to maintain your dignity as a person when you live in these conditions. It’s not exactly Nazi-era Warsaw or 1970′s Saigon or anything like that. But it’s not exactly any better than those places either.
When I took this job five years ago, construction was just starting. My first week there were three major power outages. It was a nice way to get to know people, standing in the darkened hall under the weak backup light with three or four super angry lawyers who just lost a couple hours work on a document they’d been drafting, or who had been cut off in the middle of a deposition question. I’m sure you’ve been watching this Chilean miner ordeal like I have for the last 2 months. The vast majority of you have been watching as regular civilians. You’ve watched with inexperienced wonder and amazement at the courage of the miners and the competence of the rescuers.
But a select few of you have been quietly and cannily observing this whole thing through a different set of eyes, falcon eyes; those of you, who like me, are Citizen SEALs (if you’re not familiar with that term, see here). You’ve keenly pinpointed flaws in the rescue attempt, and created a regimen for the miners to live by if they wanted to get out of there alive. Unfortunately, the Chilean government won’t let you communicate your regimen and survival advice directly to the miners, because like the idiots who run this country, they have a natural bias toward the “official” military running everything. (A Guest Post from DDDT Friend and Sleazy Salesman Troy): I went to Knowlton Elementary School in Farmington, Utah in the 1980’s. My hobbies and interests as a 6th Grader at Knowlton included collecting baseball and basketball cards, playing little league football, and girls. Read the rest of this entry »

While watching The Apprentice tonight (No, we don’t really watch The Apprentice for reals. Who still watches The Apprentice? Depressing people. People who watch NCIS and According to Jim, and shows like that. Who are these 50 million viewers watching these shows, and where do they live? Wyoming? Arkansas?

Remember our excellent series of Tiebreakers posts? You know, where you submit your intractable dispute with your significant other to DDDT’s judicious and sagacious tiebreakers to arbitrate the dispute? Well, we should really do that more, you know?
We thought we’d just put out a reminder that we’d love to get your submissions. Every person reading this, who has a significant other, has a dispute with that significant other wherein both combatants are absolutely certain they are right, and would be proved right if a neutral outsider were ever permitted to decide the question. Can’t picture what it would look like if you made a submission? It would look like this. And this. But way more fun. This post provides more background on what we’re going for here.
Anyway, now that we’re all friends, it would be a little mean of you to deny us the fun of crowdsourcing your personal arguments. Write it down and send it in and we’ll all be better friends because of it. Thanks, people.

We went and saw The Social Network on Saturday night. It’s a pretty good flick. It begins and ends with stats. The opening line is Mark Zuckerberg telling his girlfriend that there are more geniuses in China than there are people in America. Now that is just a solid Chinese statistic (and we’re big fans of those around here). Here’s the stat at the end: Facebook is currently valued at around 25 billion dollars. 25 billion dollars. Spoiler alert: Facebook is valued at 25 billion dollars. (For those that haven’t seen it, I haven’t ruined the ending. You still don’t know how many of those billions of dollars remain in billionaire Mark Zuckerberg’s name, or whether Facebook gets really popular). Another stat: Oprah was saying the other day (Spoiler Alert!) that it is estimated that about one in every fourteen people on the planet has a Facebook account. I’m not joking. You know those tribes in the interior of Indonesia who are thought to have never met up with the rest of society, and still remain in their true primitive state? We know this about them because their relationship status says “Isolated.”
“You never responded to my poke, Ryan. What is going on with you lately?”
I’m just trying to wrap my head around all this. The movie spends most of its time going back and forth between different parties who claim that Facebook was their idea, and they should get the money and the credit for it. Of course there were those in the movie that heard about the idea at its inception and weren’t that blown away by it. After we left the movie, I still wasn’t that blown away by it. Reba and I have been watching this Mormon Bachelorette thing lately. Apparently this Mormon gal, Aubrey, tried out for the real Bachelor and received a callback, but decided it was a waste of time because she wants to meet and marry a Mormon guy. So she and a few friends started this little Mormon Bachelorette thing where they film a bunch of dudes taking her on dates and then it goes to the next round, and I’m not sure what happens after that. I have three thoughts so far.
1. Kyle (date number 12) is my favorite so far. Great guy. I dare you to absorb that great-natured smile of his and to walk away without a piece of hear heart missing. Go ahead, try. (and it doesn’t hurt that I LOVE that song playing throughout Kyle’s date. Can someone give me the title of that puppy?) Read the rest of this entry »
